What Do These Buttons Do?

  • Floor Selection Button

As the name suggests, this button is used to select your destination floor. After entering the elevator, press the button for your desired floor. If the indicator light on the button turns on, it means your floor has been registered. Once the doors close, the elevator will stop at the registered floors in the order of travel.

  • Door Open Button

Most modern elevators have powered automatic doors. The door open button allows passengers inside the car to reopen the doors. If the doors are closing and you see someone trying to enter, press this button to reopen them. If the doors have already closed but the elevator hasn’t started moving, you can still press the button to open them again.

  • Door Close Button

This button is used to close the elevator doors. Normally, after a preset time, the doors will close automatically as long as the entrance sensors are not blocked. To improve efficiency, passengers can press this button to close the doors earlier.

  • Alarm Button

If a passenger is trapped inside the elevator, they can press the alarm button to notify building staff or the machine room for emergency assistance.

  • Intercom Button

In the event of being trapped, the intercom button allows passengers to communicate with the control room or machine room. Press the button once and wait for a response. Once connected, a conversation can be held continuously. If the call is disconnected, press the button again to reconnect.

  • Door Hold Button

Some freight elevators are equipped with a door hold button, usually labeled “Hold” or “Delay”.  When pressed, the doors remain open for an extended time to allow for loading and unloading of goods.

How to Use Elevator Buttons Properly?

  1. Gently press each button once—do not press repeatedly or use sharp objects such as umbrella tips or sticks. Never use your foot to press buttons.
  2. If your hands are wet or oily, dry them before pressing any button.
  3. Do not allow children to press buttons randomly.
  4. In case of emergency or being trapped, press both the alarm and intercom buttons correctly to seek help.

By understanding the elevator buttons and using them responsibly, every passenger can help ensure a safe and efficient elevator experience.
